If you want to apply drag then you can lock one or more of the rolls on the ball bearings. They also turn on the outside of the frame. By stopping one of them with e.g. the little finger then a lighter drag is applied to the reel for smaller fish. When applying a heavier drag to the reel then use the hand to break and lock 2 or more of the rolls outside of the frame. This creates a heavier drag for larger fish. Since you are locking the rolls on the outside you will not feel any discomfort in your fingers or hand.

The reel resides inside of the frame which protects the reel from being damaged.
